U.S. says has 'positive' letter from Arafat on weapons ship
By Reuters

WASHINGTON - Palestinian Authority Chairman Yasser Arafat has sent the United States a "positive" letter about the arms shipment seized by Israel in the Red Sea last month, State Department spokesman Richard Boucher said on Monday.

"We see it as a positive letter. We are currently studying it. I would nonetheless point out that, as we have said many times, actions must follow words," he told a briefing.

Arafat wrote the letter to U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell and the Palestinians gave it to the U.S. consul general in Jerusalem, Ron Schlicher, at the weekend, he said. The Bush administration has accepted the Israeli allegations that the Palestinian Authority arranged the shipment of 50 tons of weapons from Iran.

It had demanded that Arafat investigate the shipment and prevent future attempts to smuggle arms to territory under the control of the Palestinian Authority.

"We hope now to see strong, resolute and irreversible action by Chairman Arafat and the Palestinian Authority along the lines indicated in the letter," Boucher said
