Knesset panel: No raises in 2009 for MKs, salaries to stay at NIS 33,259

The Knesset House Committee announced Tuesday that MKs will not receive salary raises in 2009, leaving their monthly wages at NIS 33,259.

The result of the committee's unanimous decision is an additional NIS 997 will not be added to the lawmakers' monthly wages despite plans to the contrary.

"It's important that the Knesset set an example to the public during these hard times," said former Knesset speaker MK Reuven Rivlin (Likud). "The MKs need to show an adjustment to the public's needs."

The committee convened following a query by TheMarker's regarding an automatic salary update system, which entitles MKs to a three percent raise based on an assessment of the average increase in wages in Israel.

In addition to their monthly salaries, lawmakers also receive a vehicle.

The Knesset finance committee will convene Wednesday to determine if the salaries of the president, prime minister, ministers and judges will also be frozen.

Committee chairman MK David Tal (Kadima) said: "It's important, appropriate and fitting to improve this Knesset's image. This is a message to the public that the MKs are setting a personal example."
