EU: Iran's remarks against Israel 'unacceptable, uncivilised'

The European Union on Monday denounced statements by Iranian leaders against Israel as "unacceptable, damaging and uncivilised".

The EU's Slovenian presidency referred to remarks by Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki, parliament Speaker Gholamali Haddadadel and Revolutionary Guard commander Mohammad Ali Jafari.

"Their comments pointed against Israel are unacceptable, damaging and uncivilised," it said. "The EU calls on Iran to stop hostile rhetoric and refrain from all threats towards other states, members of the international community."

Ahmadinejad's remarks were broadcast on Iranian television on Wednesday, in which he called Israel a "filthy germ" and "savage beast" established by Western states in their bid to dominate Middle East nations.

The comments came just days after a top commander in Iran's Revolutionary Guard called Israel a "cancerous germ" which would be wiped out by Hezbollah, Army Radio reported.

Iran does not recognise Israel and Ahmadinejad has often predicted the imminent demise of the Jewish state.
